Write toward the light.
We accept submissions on a wide range of topics that fit into Environmental Media. We look at the lifecycle of our current global communications infrastructures, from mining rare earth minerals, imperialism and colonialism, e-waste, sensors and towers, data centers, the cloud, 5G, and everything else that connects the ‘wired’ world. We look globally at how ‘natural’ disasters, racism, pandemics, genomics, climate change, mass food systems, and pollution have become inscribed into the environment, and how nature itself becomes medium and message.
Please follow these guidelines when submitting:
Submissions should be between 500 and 1500 words.
We also welcome accompanying video and audio pieces, although we do not currently have space to host them ourselves. Please get permission for your images as needed.
We prefer that references are hyperlinked. To do this, type the text you’d like hyperlinked in square brackets followed by the link itself in round brackets. For example, if you want to the words Environmental Media Lab to link to https://www.environmentalmedialab.com, you would write [Environmental Media Lab](https://www.environmentalmedialab.com).
Please also include citations at the end, in whatever style you prefer.
We encourage you to end your piece with a set of questions, prompts, or provocations.
Simultaneous submissions are fine, but do let us know (promptly, please) if your work is accepted elsewhere.
The submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and, once accepted, will be published quickly.
